Major periods (Mahadasha) last 6 to 20 years. Sub-periods (Antardasha) sit inside them. Each is ruled by a planet that influences different areas of your life.
The sequence is unique. It is determined by which lunar mansion (nakshatra) the Moon occupied at birth. It does not change because a planet is transiting a sign this month.

What transits are
Transits are current planetary positions relative to your birth chart. They are “now” against “then.”
